The last few weeks I´ve been exploring the blogs of all those amazing expat travelers and roaming writers out there. There is tons of great stories being told and there is no problem getting lost for hours. As a small try to give something back to my favorite bloggers, here's some tips on how to work with your pictures on the blog.
Give us the big picture
Always pick one image to start the post. At the very top of the post, show us the one picture that summarize the story and make it as big as possible. Pictures are the best way to catch someones interest and will make more people go from your main blog page in to the actual post. Publishing a "featured" image for each post will also give you a better click-through ratio when sharing on Facebook or other social media platforms.
Let them work together
If you are saying the exact same thing in the text as you do in the pictures, you could as well write the same thing twice. Using both mediums will give you the opportunity to tell a more vivid and saturated story. If you are writing about a destination, tell us how to get there in the text and meditate the mood in the images. If the post is about that great-tasting but slimy-looking meal you had the other day, tell us about the amazing tastebud orgasm it gave you and let the pictures show some of the ingredients, before they became the not-so-photogenic dish. Text and image have different strengths and weaknesses, learn to take advantage of them.
Keep it to a few
Spend an extra minute on deciding what images will add something to the story. To much visual clutter will make the article harder to read and the eye will wander from the text. Use less, but larger images. If it is hard to kill your darlings, try to see it from the viewers perspective. Will the reader of the blog gain from this image? If not, cut i out.
